Things To Do in Beppu

What to do in Beppu

Beppu is a famous hot spring resort city on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu, renowned for having one of the highest volumes of geothermal water in the world. The city is best known for its dramatic steam-filled landscapes and the colorful Jigoku (“Hells of Beppu”), a collection of striking hot springs.

Beppu Jigoku (Hells of Beppu)

Beppu Jigoku (the “Hells of Beppu”) is a collection of spectacular geothermal hot springs in the Kannawa and Shibaseki districts of Beppu. Each “hell” has distinct features, from the cobalt-blue waters of Umi Jigoku (“Sea Hell”) to the deep red Chinoike Jigoku (“Blood Pond Hell”) and bubbling mud pools like Oniishibozu Jigoku. Surrounded by dramatic steam vents and volcanic landscapes, the area showcases the powerful geothermal activity that makes Beppu one of Japan’s most famous hot spring destinations.

Hot Spring Baths (Onsen) and Sand Baths

Beppu is known for its many onsen, where visitors bathe in geothermally heated mineral water. Baths may be indoors or outdoors, and the water is typically quite hot. In addition to regular baths, some facilities offer sand baths, where staff cover you in naturally heated sand for about 10–15 minutes. Both options are widely available throughout the city and are easy to try as a visitor.

Try out Jigoku-mushi

Jigoku-mushi is a traditional cooking method from Beppu that uses natural hot spring steam to prepare food. The name literally means “hell steaming,” inspired by the area’s famous geothermal sites. Instead of boiling or grilling, ingredients such as seafood, vegetables, eggs, and pork are placed in special steaming pots over vents that release mineral-rich steam from the earth. The result is tender, flavorful food that retains its natural taste and nutrients, often with a subtle hint of the hot spring minerals.
