Title: Edge Computing for Future Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems

Bio:

Lin Wang is currently an Assistant Professor in the computer systems section at VU Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Before joining VU, he worked as a senior researcher at TU Darmstadt, Germany. He was a visiting researcher at IMDEA Networks Institute from 2012-2014. He received the Athene Young Investigator Award from TU Darmstadt in 2018. He is currently principal investigator of the DFG Collaborative Research Center MAKI. His research is mainly focused on networked systems for emerging (mobile) applications where he explores topics including mobile/edge deep learning, edge storage, intermittent edge computing, and in-network computing.

Abstract:

Mobile and ubiquitous systems have become an essential part of our daily life. These systems typically rely on the collection and analytics of a large volume of data from various sensors and user devices. On the other hand, smart applications (e.g., augmented reality, personal assistant) running on such systems impose strict performance requirements including high analytics accuracy and low response time. This talk discusses how to address this fundamental challenge by building a modern edge computing system. We explore the system design and the resource management problems and present case studies to show how the proposed edge computing system can be used to better support emerging mobile/ubiquitous applications.
