Message From the General Chair
Welcome to Dublin and to the fifth running of the International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Computing, Networking and Services (MobiQuitous), which is this year collocated with the first edition of the International Symposium on Vehicular Computing Systems (ISVCS). On behalf of myself and my colleagues at Trinity College Dublin, we are delighted to be able to host what promises to be a stimulating week of workshops, conference sessions, keynote presentations, demonstrations and, above all, lively discussion.
The MobiQuitous 2008 programme this year includes four collocated workshops (The International Workshop on Human Control of Ubiquitous Systems, The International Workshop on Computational Transportation Science, The International Workshop on Middleware for Mobile Embedded Peer-to-Peer Systems, and The 2nd International Symposium on Security and Multimodality in Pervasive Environments). The tone for the main conference will be set by three exciting keynote presentations shared with ISVCS and to be given by Greg O'Hare, John Leonard, and Hannes Hartenstein. The main conference programme comprises 18 high-quality technical papers and simultaneous poster and demonstration sessions featuring ten unique demonstrations. The research to be presented covers the full breadth of mobile and ubiquitous computing although collocation with ISVCS means that there is something of an automotive flavour to the event this year.
As General Chair it has been my privilege to work with a dedicated team of people in organising this year's event and I would like to thank them all for their contribution and service over the last year. Liviu Iftode, as Technical Program Chair, was the driving force behind the technical programme. Together with the Technical Programme Committee he oversaw the paper review process that resulted in the high-quality technical programme that has been put in place. Christian Becker and Fabian Bustamante as Workshop Chairs defined this year's workshop programme. Dean Eckles, our Poster Chair, and Tatsuo Nakajima and Alan Messer, our Demonstration Chairs, oversaw the poster and demonstration programme and the associated one-minute madness session, which promises to be an exhilarating event! Cristian Borcea, Siobhán Clarke and Ichiro Satoh, our Publicity Chairs, took responsibility for worldwide event publicity and are doubtless in no small part responsible for your presence here! Cormac Driver took on the arduous task of marshalling the final paper submissions as Publication Chair and Aline Senart, our Web Chair, was always on hand to make instant updates to the Web site. Finally, our Conference Coordinator, Dorothy Bany, pulled all the pieces together to make this year's event a reality. In addition to the organising and programme committees, I am indebted to my colleagues at Trinity College who assisted with various aspects of the local arrangements especially, Nicola Meenan, Gillian Long, Tom Kearney, James Murphy and René Meier as ISVCS General Co-chair and liaison. Finally, I would like to thank Imrich Chlamtac and the other members of the steering committee for their support during the year and, especially, for entrusting me with the task of chairing MobiQuitous 2008.
In conclusion I hope that you find this year's event a stimulating and useful week and that you enjoy your time in Dublin.
Vinny Cahill
General Chair, MobiQuitous 2008
Message from the TPC Chair
On behalf of the Technical Program Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 5th MobiQuitous conference. This year, we have a particularly strong technical program covering a broad range of topics from middleware for pervasive applications, wireless networks and mobile device challenges to pervasive spaces, human interaction and social factors in pervasive computing. I hope that you will find it both informative and inspirational for your research.
The 103 submissions we received were reviewed by an outstanding technical program committee consisting of 29 experts in various areas of mobile and pervasive computing. Three PC members carefully reviewed each paper. A one-day PC meeting was held in April in Newark, New Jersey, where each paper with a score of 2 or greater was discussed. At the end, 18 full papers were accepted, which corresponds to a 17.5% acceptance ratio. I would like to conclude my message by expressing my deep gratitude to the members of the technical committee and especially, to those who made the extra effort to attend the meeting either in person or over the phone. I do believe that the physical meeting of the TPC that we were able to arrange this year made a tremendous difference in the quality of the paper selection process.
I would also like to thank Vinny Cahill, the General Chair, Imrich Chlamac, the Steering Committee Chair, the Steering Committee members, Dean Eckles, the Posters Chair, Tatsuo Nakajima and Alan Messer, the Demos Co-Chairs, Cristian Borcea, Siobhan Clarke and Ichiro Satoh, the Publicity Co-Chairs, Cormac Driver, the Publictiy Chair, Aline Senart, the Web Chair, and Dorothy Bany, our Conference Coordinator, for their advice, dedication and excellent collaboration, without whom I could have not been able to complete my job.
Finally, I would like to thank all the authors who submitted their papers to this conference, to congratulate one more time those whose papers were accepted, and to invite all of you to attend what I guarantee to be a very interesting conference.
Liviu Iftode,
Technical Program Committee Chair, MobiQuitous 2008
